STYLE: How To Wear Dresses in Winter

Just because it’s COLD outside doesn’t mean you have to hide all of your dresses away until the temperature goes up a little bit. Dresses can be worn even in the middle of the winter, and all it takes to make them cozy enough is a little bit of layering knowledge. In fact, you SHOULD wear your dresses in the winter. They have the potential to look really adorable and stylish!

In order to make dresses appropriate for winter, you have to have some fashion basics down-pack aka leggings, tights, boots, thick socks, cardigans, and scarves. You want to look cute, but you also don’t want to freeze your butt off. It’s not worth it!

If you simply are not a pants kind of gal, fear not, because there are plenty of stylish tricks to make dresses and skirts work in the winter. Here are our top three suggestions.

We're not talking about the ugly thick stockings you HAVE to wear as part of your school uniform. We are talking about soft, opaque tights that look good and give you the warmth and coverage you need when wearing your fav winter dress or skirt.

Basic black or skin-coloured pair is required in your wardrobe.  Indulge or explore in knits, floral, stripes, polka dots or whatever you think looks cool & interesting.

Tip #2: LAYER (with long sleeves tops & tees)

Instead of being the ultimate star, play it cool by making your dress on point by adding a long sleeve stripe tee or collared button shirt underneath.  Indian Blue, 717 and Street Called Madison have some awesome pieces that can sort you out.  Snug fit usually works best, however don't be afraid of colour & prints.  Play around and find out what you love! Then REVERSE it by wearing a basic tee with a super edgy dress over the top.  The Trouble Overall Dress by Finger in the nose (France) is one of our coolest plaid pieces.  Super edgy take on your school girl print.

A shorter A-line, shift or tunic dress can look like a complete new piece when worn over pants.  Leggings are the perfect pant to wear with 99% of winter dresses.  They are warm, comfy and not too baggy, meaning they work perfectly even when wearing a skater style or over-sized knit dress.   Just like tights, it's good to own a basic black pair, but then make sure you have some fun too with florals and prints.  The Fringe Dress by Blue Seven and the Dao Check Dress by Finger in the nose are both great dresses that can be transformed into many different looks with the changing of leggings.

Have fun this winter with DRESSES.  Stay warm & look good.
